At its first Steering Committee meeting held on 6th August, 2013 in Paramaribo, Suriname, the “REDD+ for the Guiana Shield project” agreed in principle to the ONF signing a memorandum of understanding with the GSF.
Both the ONF and the GSF support REDD+ activities in Amapá State (Brazil), Guyana and Suriname – the countries covered by the ONF project. The GSF has a wider coverage of the entire Guiana Shield ecoregion.
The project “REDD+ for the Guiana Shield” was initiated, at first by Guyana, Suriname and France, shortly after joined by the Amapá state of Brazil, at the occasion of the UNFCCC’s fourteenth Conference of Parties, held in 2008 in Poznan. The project aims at providing information and tools to be used by countries to establish sound science-based policies and measures to tackle deforestation and forest degradation, in the framework of the REDD+ mechanism.
