UNDP supports 3rd International Congress on Biodiversity of the Guiana Shield
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is contributing US$ 50.000 to the 3rd International Congress on Biodiversity of the Guiana Shield. The contract was recently signed between the Chief Technical Advisor of the Guiana Shield Facility (GSF), Mr. Patrick Chesney, and the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), Prof. Dr. Marten Schalkwijk. The GSF is a UNDP regional project.
The Biodiversity Congress is recognized by the UNDP as an emerging ecoregional forum. The UNDP contribution will support the exchange of knowledge and capacity building to enhance the conservation and sustainable development of the Guiana Shield region.
The UNDP is providing more specifically assistance with a special event on 'Gender and Environment' for the purpose of mainstreaming gender into productive sectors. Furthermore the assistance is intended for a Priority Setting Workshop, which should assist in establishing the Society for Biodiversity of the Guiana Shield. This Society will serve as a scientific knowledge platform for planning interventions to safeguard the biodiversity and ecosystems of the Guiana Shield. The platform has been discussed during previous congresses but need to be formalized. In addition the UNDP support will be used for promotion of the congress, support to key stakeholders to attend the congress and publication of abstracts and papers.
The UNDP contribution is a crucial one, since it provides the LOC room to continue with its planning of the abovementioned events.
