GSI Steering Committee

The Steering Committee gives guidance on the objectives and implementation of GSI. It provides the essential local and national ownership necessary for the development of GSI. The Steering Committee has eleven permanent members: six high-level representatives of each of the Guiana Shield countries, three donor representatives and two representatives of main partner organizations. All members have a seat on the Steering Committee in a personal capacity.
The permanent members of our Steering Committee are:
  • Dr Manuel Rodriguez Becerra, former Minister of the Environment in Colombia, advisor to all subsequent ministers of the environment, teaching and consulting
  • Maj Gen (ret'd) Joseph Singh from Guyana, former Chief of Staff, former Director Conservation International Guyana, currently CEO of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company
  • Mr Willem Udenhout, former Prime Minister of Suriname and Ambassador to the U.S.A., now Director Conservation International Suriname
  • Dr Judith Rosales from Venezuela, Head of the Bioguayana Programme of the Universidad Nacional Experimental de Guayana doing research, teaching and advising on the ecological, socio-cultural and economic aspects of the Guiana Shield Region in Venezuela
  • Mr. Claude Suzanon from French Guiana, president of the Association Sepunguy and first Vice-President of the Parc Amazonien de Guyane, and member of the National Council for Nature Conservancy of the French Ministry for Ecology and Sustainable Development.
  • Dra. Ima Célia Guimarães Vieira from Brazil, Director of the Museu Paraense Emilio Goeldi in Belem - Pará and researcher and author on many themes relevant to the GSI.
  • Donor Representative: Mr Frank Jacobs for The European Union
  • Donor Representative: Mr Didier Trebucq, Deputy Resident Representative UNDP Guyana
  • Donor Representative: Mr Frans van Haren, Ex-ambassador of the Netherlands to Colombia
  • Mr Dominiek Plouvier, Coordinator WWF-Guianas Programme
  • Mr Robert Hofstede, Coordinator IUCN Regional Office for South America (Quito).
